Active Directory Migration Guideline
A. AD Migration Guideline (For Win XP Pro)
1.0 Purpose
This document is the guideline used to migrate workstation with operating system as Windows XP Pro to Active Directory (AD)
2.0 Pre-Migration Checklist
2.1 You have your Local Administrator account;
2.2 You already know your corporate domain account (hereafter refer as AD account –
available from MIS Infobase – Network – Active Directory – AD Account) ;
2.3 You had in mind a valid new password to replace the default ones after logging in.
(Please refer to “MIS Inforbase – Network – Active Directory - AD Password Related to understand what constitutes a valid password. )
Summarizing the required parameters
My local administrator account : ________________________
My local administrator password : ________________________
My AD (and Novell) userID is : ________________________
My AD (and Novell) default password is : _______ABCabc01_________
My new password is : _________________________
2.4 To synchronize this procedure. My XP is configure to classic view by :
a. Right-click on the task bars and selects “Properties”;
b. Select the “Start Menu” tab to select “Classic Start Menu”.
In this procedure and example, my current logon domain & account is “xxxxNET1\my_name”
My Creative domain account is “domain_name\user_name”
My Computer name is xxxx
3.0 Migration Procedures
3.1 Start your system.
3.2 Logon as Local Administrator.
To logon on local as local administrator, at the logon screen, input your local administrator userID and password. In the “Domain” field, select your own computer name.
3.3 After successfully login, right-click on “My Computer” and select “Properties”.
3.4 Select “Computer Name” tab and click the “Change” button

3.5 Under “Member of”, enter for domain : “domain_name.com” .

3.6 Click the “More” button.
3.7 Under “Primary DNS suffix of this computer”, enter “cesb.creaf.com”. (Refer to above screen)
IMPORTANT: Uncheck “Change primary DNS suffix when domain
membership changes” and click OK.
3.8 A login prompt will appear to authenticate you to join your domain.
Enter your AD-UserID & default password. Click “OK”.


You will be able to join the domain easily.

3.9 After successful joining, click “OK”. Do not reboot the system when prompt.
a. Click “OK” for above will acknowledge the message, but will not restart your system
b. Click “OK” again to close the “System Properties” windows. Do not restart the system.
Add your AD-account as local administrator
3.10 Right-click on “My Computer” icon and click “Manage” to see the “Computer Management” windows.
3.11 Double-click on “Local Users and Groups”. Double-click on “Groups”.
a. Double-click “Administrators” on the right window panel to open the
“Administrators Properties” windows.

b. Click the “Add” button.
3.12 Click on the “Advanced” button.

a. To browse “domain_name.com” domain, enter your AD-userID and default password.

b. In the “Name” field, key in your AD-userID (in full). Click “Find Now”.

Your AD-account appears in the lower part of the Window. Click “OK” until you return to the “Administrators properties” windows. Verify your AD-userID is a member of “Administrators” group.
3.13 Click “OK” to close the “Administrators Properties” windows.
3.14 Close the “Computer Management” windows to return to desktop.
3.15 Restart your system now.
After RESTART
3.16 Logon to your domain using your AD-userID and default password. For login in CREATIVE domain you need to change your domain to domain_name and for login as local user you must change your domain to pc name.
3.17 Successfully logon, a new default desktop profile is created for you. Start with this new profile if you wish. Else restore your previous profile:
Copy previous desktop profile for your AD-account (Optional)
Note that the first logon using your AD-account is necessary to ‘plant’ a new profile. Subsequently, we overwrite it with your old profile.
3.18 IMPORTANT: Logout and logon again as Local administrator. Ignore Netware login.
3.19 At your desktop, right-click on “My Computer” and select “Properties”.
3.20 Select the “Advanced” tab. Under “User Profiles”, click the “Settings” button.
A Windows call “User Profiles” appears.

3.21 Highlight your previous domain\account.

My previous domain & account is ‘com_name\user_name’. Click the “Copy To” button.
3.22 Click “Browse” button :

a. Browse to “C:\Documents and Settings\???” where “ ??? “ is your AD-userID. Select “??? “and click “OK”.

b. This brings you back to the “Copy to” Windows.
3.23 Click “Change” button under “Permitted to use” :


a. Click “Advanced” button. Enter your AD-userID and password when prompt in order to browse “domain_name” domain (“domain_name.com” is equivalent to domain_name).
b. Enter your AD-userID (in full) under the name field and click “Find Now”.

c. Your name appears on the lower windows. Click “OK” until your reach the
“Copy To” Windows.
d. Click “OK”. When prompt to delete existing profile, click “Yes” :

e. Click “OK” until you reach your desktop.
3.24 Logout from the current Local administrator session.
3.25 Logon now to your domain using your AD-userID and account.
Your old desktop will appear for you.
Renew the default password
Think of a valid password first. A valid password is at least 8 characters, contains a mixture of Uppercase, Lowercase and Number (or 3 special characters) Eg Windows01 or Windows_$#. It must not contain part of you username, userID or consecutively repeating characters such as Aa, Bb, 88 and etc...
Password is case-sensitive so pay attention to the cap-lock or num-lock.
